We learned about a time honored tradition. When a man wanted to marry his sweetheart, he would carve a beautiful design into a pair of wooden shoes. He would leave them on her doorstep one evening. He would return the next morning to find her answer. If she took the shoes inside, she had accepted and they would soon be wed. If the shoes remained on the doorstep, her answer was no.
The shop also had many intricately painted shoes, pictured in the second photo.
