We got to Heathrow airport about a half hour early, at 6:30 am local time. Customs was a breeze, then it was off to the hotel. Tracie wanted to take the Tube (subway) and then walk the 2 blocks to the hotel. Doug wanted to take a taxi. Since we were all quite tired, it was decided that a Black Cab was the way to go. We found the taxi que and were soon on our way to the hotel. The taxis here are very interestingly built. The front passenger seat area is actually used for luggage. All 4 of our suitcases and 2 of our duffle bags fit up there. The back seat has a standard back seat, and 2 rear facing fold up seats, which you only fold down if someone needs to use one. So Doug and Josh sat in those.
The driving here is quite interesting. It does not seem weird to be traveling on the opposite side of the road than we are used to, as I thought it would. The brake repair companies must make a fortune here. It seems no one knows how to come to a gradual stop, nor do they know how to start off slowly. It is slam on the brakes, step on the gas, slam on the brakes. I believe the traffic lights encourage this. Not only do they have the yellow light after green to let you know red is coming soon, but the yellow is also after the red, to let you know green is coming. This seems to make everyone start rolling when it is yellow so they can be sure to punch the gas as soon as the light is green.
This picture shows how we were feeling about this.
