The White Cliffs of Dover

After leaving Canterbury,  we took a short ride to Dover to see the White Cliffs, made famous by the WWII song "There'll Be Bluebirds Flying Over The White Cliffs of Dover." Monika told us that the song was not referring to actual bluebirds, but was describing the war planes.

The white cliffs are white because they are made of chalk, the compressed bones of animals from long ago.  We were let out at a beach to take pictures and told to be back at the bus in 20 minutes.

The beach was all stones. Not pebbles, but almost golf ball sized stones. They were smooth and round, and Zack took his shoes off and said it felt good on his feet.

Monika pointed out that we were in luck - it was clear enough today to see France.  In the second picture, the faint bit of darkness at the horizon is France.

We soon were back on the bus headed back to London.  We arrived back at Victoria Station about 6:45pm and grabbed a taxi back to the hotel. We were glad to be back 2 hours earlier today.
